Why use board deck grip?
For surfers and advanced skimboarders, traction pads assist your rear foot in getting more grip while on the board, giving you the opportunity to pull more aggressive maneuvers. Once planted, the traction pad’s kick tail anchors your back foot lending to harder snaps and aerial maneuvers.
Beginner skimboarders may not be pulling airs and tricks, but the tail pad lets the rider know where to land their back foot as they advance their skill. That said, flat or arched will serve that purpose well. A second consideration is, if you feel you may want to add a traction pad in the future, it’s best to consider applying it while the board is new. The pad will stick best to clean, new surface vs. one that may have some surf wax residue.
How do I apply my Hammer Traction pads?
Application Instructions:
Pad should not be applied in direct sunlight or it may be more difficult to handle. For adhesive to fuse with board fully, the traction should be applied to the board at least 24 hours in advance of getting wet.
PREP THE SURFACE to get strong adhesion; ALL dust, dirt, wax, oil, sand or other debris must be removed from your board before placing your pad.
New boards: Clean with a multi-purpose household spray cleaner and paper towels. Since the choice of cleaners is pretty broad, test the cleaner on a small area of the board prior to using to be sure it will not leave any residue or effect your finish. Many use rubbing alcohol or window cleaner.
Used boards: Remove wax by softening in the sun or with a hair dryer. Scrape off with a wax comb, nylon spatula or some other flat edge non-damaging tool. Repeat this process if necessary. Use paper towels and acetone to remove the residue. Use acetone only on the areas the traction will be applied.
Caution: Refer to acetone label for safety recommendations. Acetone is highly flammable.
STICK THE PAD: Remove plastic film from your Hammer pad. DO NOT remove the paper backing. Use a staple remover (or a flat head screw driver) on the back side of the card, if necessary, to release the staples.(For multi-piece pads you can keep the pieces together with masking tape until application is complete. Apply sufficient tape to top before removing staples.)
Arrange the pad on the board the way you want. Mark the placement spots with a pencil, chalk line or masking tape. Peel back the paper about 1” at the tail, stick the pad's tail to the board. Double check placement and then peel off all remaining paper backing in one direction, smoothing the pad down as you go. Press down firmly. Try not to touch the sticky sections during application.
Warning: Do note expose Hammer Grip to excessive heat or sunlight. Discontinue use if skin irritation occurs.
