TEAM | NBD’s With Indy Bryan

Indy Bryan, son of skimboard legend Bill Bryan, is known for his killer style and his insane bag of tricks. Especially the “NBD’s” he’s done. And if you’re out of the know, “NBD” stands for a trick that has never been done before and Indy has more than a few under his belt! From kickflips to varial heels, Indy has stomped some crazy technical skim maneuvers. We chatted with him to see how he approaches these insane tricks. Check it out now!

HAMMER: Hey dude! What’s up? How has your off-season been treating you?
Indy: Off-season is my favorite time of year. First off, because it’s the locals’ summer—the sand at the local skim breaks begins to transition from the summer setup to winter, traffic goes from insane to slightly tolerable, allowing for easier travel for strike missions, and it marks the beginning of Indian summer. We tend to score more often in the winter season, especially due to the extreme tides, aka king tides. My dad—the 17x world champ of skimboarding—has profound meteorologic knowledge, and he’s been taking me to the best, rare spots. From Santa Barbara liners around rocks, scoring the river break at Aliso on numerous occasions, world-class skimboarding sandbar at the world-famous Malibu Point, huge step-off waves everywhere from catching massive Jaws swells at Doheny, to scoring the biggest south swell of the fall season at Leo Carrillo, and skurfing a world-class secret spot at El Capitan, not to mention rare Malibu mysto siders in LA/Ventura County all the way to San Diego siders at The People’s Wall—it’s been blowing the community’s mind, so you could say winter has treated me great. Thirdly, the off-season gives me a chance to dial in my tech and equipment simultaneously while hitting up these insane breaks. I’ve been grinding on the Varial flip, re-entry, and getting closer day by day, stomping NBDs every other week.

HAMMER: You’re known for stomping a lot of NBD’s (tricks that have never been done). How many would you say you’ve landed? Can you list some out?

Indy: Oh, for sure!

  1. Backside Kickflip
  2. Frontside Kickflip,
  3. Backside Shuv-it to Varial-Flip
  4. Frontside Shuv-it to Varial-Flip
  5. 360 to Varial
  6. Dolphin Flip
  7. Indy Flip AKA Kickflip Hand Assist
  8. Backside Indy Flip
  9. Backwards Varial

HAMMER: Which one was your favorite to land?
Indy: I would have to say, front side flip, or Front-Shuv to Varial.

HAMMER: Which one took the longest to land?
Indy: The basic Kickflip was my largest hurdle taking over a year and 8 months or so to figure out.

HAMMER: Can you give us some insight into the process of landing a trick like that?
Indy: Trying again and again without giving up and always giving it your best, i had to be good enough at skateboarding and skimboarding to ride away that's why it took so long, countless hours of practice blood sweat and tears, as well as the hours or visualization and studying, researching clips, it didn’t come easy.

HAMMER: What other tricks are on your hit list for this season?
Indy: Varial-Heel, Hardflip, Tre-Flip to name a few. & ofcourse the prestigious V-flip Re-Entered back onto the wave.

HAMMER: That’s sick. We hope to see you land some more! Is there anything else you’d like to tell us before we go?
Indy: Yeah! Check out our website 10thStBros.com… it has been a long time coming!
